Love is in the Air
February, the month of Valentines and love, is here! Do you do anything special for Valentine’s Day? I loved picking out special cards each year for my friends, and creating mailboxes to collect them in. And, I still like to buy candy hearts at the store!
If you have kids, do their classrooms still have Valentine’s Day parties? Mine do, but they usually just eat pizza and participate in a fun activity with their classmates.
As an adult, I still love to send Valentine cards to friends and family, especially those I haven’t seen in awhile. With so much email and social media in our lives, it’s a nice surprise to get handwritten cards in the mail. Valentine’s Day is an unexpected day to receive mail!
Do-It-Yourself Valentine Crafts
Are you the crafty type? There are so many fun ideas for inexpensive things you can make to show someone you care! From something as simple as a hand-drawn card with a heartfelt message, to heart-shaped baked goods and more, there’s something for every skill level.
When I was searching for ideas, I found this list from HGTV. It includes things like:
– Conversation heart cookies
– DIY cupcake bouquet
– Valentine tea bags
– Heart-shaped window clings
– Fringed heart-shaped pinata
– Etched wineglasses
– Conversation heart bath bombs
– Festive Valentine banners
– Candy necklaces
Heart-Shaped Crayons
Do you have kids? A fun Valentine craft for children is making heart-shaped crayons! I did this a few years ago with my kids, and it was a big hit. You probably already have plenty of broken crayons in your house, so you might as well do something fun with them!
All you need is a silicone heart-shaped mold (or any shape, for that matter) and a pile of broken crayons. You’ll need to peel the paper off the crayons first, and then sort them into colors that work well together. It’s a great sorting activity for smaller kids! For example, pinks and reds, various shades of greens and yellows, or blues and purples. Get creative! But remember that adding dark colors like blacks or browns will cover up the brighter colors.
Next, fill the molds with sorted crayons, then pop them in the oven! Bake them at 250 degrees for about 15-20 minutes until the crayons are fully melted. Let them cool and harden before attempting to remove them from the molds.
You can add a cute paper Valentine with the heart-shaped crayons and give them as gifts- they’re perfect for classroom parties. Here’s a tutorial along with an idea for cards.
Valentine Reminders for Panel Members
As Valentine’s Day approaches, remember to scan items you purchase for yourself or others, such as candy, cards, flowers, and other gifts. Fresh flowers and plants are often overlooked, but you can report these in the Non-Barcoded Items list in NCPMobile.

Frequently Asked Questions: Stores
James from National Consumer Panel answers some of the questions panel members frequently ask us about reporting retailers and stores correctly, including:
✔ What do I do if I select the wrong retailer?
✔ How do I select a retailer and create a favorite store list?
✔ Why do I have to enter prices for some stores and not others?

Hi, it’s James from NCP. Are you a panel member with questions about best practices for keeping track of your favorite retailers and stores when using the app? If so, this video is for you. Today we’ll go over some frequently asked questions about reporting retailers and stores correctly. Let’s get started.
What do I do if I select the wrong retailer at the start of a shopping trip?
If you choose the wrong store name at the start of a shopping trip, simply tap the done button and will take you to the item cart screen. From there you can go back to the store list and choose the correct store.
How do I select a retailer and create a favorite store list?
On the select a retailer screen, you’ll see a filter option that you can use to easily search for a particular store or store type by typing in the name. Next to each store name and store type on the list you’ll see a star. To create a list of your favorite stores, simply tap the star next to the name and the star will change color. Then at the top of the screen, tap favorites and you’ll see all the stores that you chose as your favorites listed there. It’s as easy as that.
Why do I have to enter prices for some stores and not others?
Some retailers provide NCP with pricing information for their products, while others don’t. This is why you may have to enter prices for some stores but not others.
We hope that you found this video informative. Do you have any other questions when it comes to your experience on the NCP panel? If so, let us know in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Any Way You Slice It…
Let’s talk about bread! I just love it! Do you? I don’t even think there’s a type of bread that I don’t like. But, bread sometimes gets a bad rap and seems to be the first thing to go for those following a no-carb or low-carb diet/lifestyle.
The origins of bread
According to Britannica, bread has been a major food since prehistoric times. The first bread was made in Neolithic times, nearly 12,000 years ago, probably of coarsely crushed grain mixed with water, with the resulting dough laid on heated stones and baked by covering with hot ashes. The Egyptians supposedly discovered that allowing wheat doughs to ferment, thus forming gases, produced a light, expanded loaf. They also developed baking ovens.
Interesting bread sales data
According to Baking Business, in July 2023, Circana data showed that non-GMO, no preservatives, organic and lower-calorie claims led dollar sales for the bread category. Protein and low-carb claims drove the most unit growth and will likely stay in high demand as diets like keto remain popular among consumers.
The wonderful world of bread
Not only is bread delicious, it is relatively inexpensive (depends on the type) and, it fills you up! Here’s a list from Country Living Magazine of just some of the many breads available today, are any of these your favorite?
Whole Wheat
Sourdough
Rye
Pumpernickel
Pita Bread
Multigrain
Focaccia
Ciabatta
Challah
Brioche
Baguette
Any way you slice it, bread is here to stay!
Info for Panel Members
Whether you make your own bread, buy pre-packaged bread, or buy fresh bread, please remember to scan the items you purchase.
Fresh bread that doesn’t have a UPC barcode can be reported using the Non-Barcoded Items list (Baked Goods category) in the NCPMobile app. If you need additional info, check out our video about reporting non-barcoded items.
Just for laughs: Why did the slice of bread get sent home from school? It was feeling crumby.
Best regards,
Taylor

Soup Season is Here
January is National Soup Month, and for good reason- nothing tastes better on a cold winter day than a warm bowl of soup!
My family has been eating a lot of soup the past few weeks. We enjoy all kinds: canned, packaged, take-out, and homemade. We’ve been experimenting with a lot of new recipes this month, too, especially ones we can make in the slow cooker. I love how it fills the house with wonderful smells while we’re waiting for it to cook!
Soup is also an excellent comfort food when you’re feeling under the weather. Whenever I’m sick, chicken noodle soup is one of the first things I want to eat.
What’s your favorite type of soup? Leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you!
Soup Facts
Soup is a liquid dish that contains stock, milk, or water along with meat or vegetables. It’s usually served warm or hot, but there are plenty of cold soups, too.
How long have people been eating soup? Archaeologists have found evidence of soup consumption in 6,000 BC, around the time the Mesopotamia/Fertile Crescent was first inhabited.
You might be surprised to learn what the first kind of soup was: hippopotamus.
Americans eat about 10 billion bowls of soup every year- that’s about 30 bowls of soup per person!
The most popular soup in the United States is chicken noodle, my favorite childhood staple.

Soups Around the Country
Different areas of the country specialize in different types of soup. If you’re visiting Louisiana, for example, you might try turtle soup. In New England, clam chowder is often on the menu.
The Daily Meal made a list of soups for all 50 states based on local and national traditions, locally-grown ingredients, and other factors. Now, be aware that these aren’t necessarily the most popular soups in each state, but it’s a fun list to inspire new ideas.
Check it out below and let me know what you think about the soup listed for your state! Have you ever tried it? And if you, like me, were surprised by some of these concoctions, be sure to head over to the Daily Meal to find out exactly why they chose this dish for your state!

Your Thoughts About Soup
Earlier this month, we asked panel members about soup on our Facebook and Instagram channels. We wanted to know what kind of soup you buy most often: canned, cartons/boxes, instant or microwaveable containers, store-prepared, or if you prefer to make your own soup. Not surprisingly, we got a wide variety of answers!
Many panel members buy canned or boxed soups for several reasons: convenience, for cooking other things like casseroles, or for emergencies when there’s no time to cook.
A lot of you, however, like to make your own soup!
For some, making your own is for health reasons. Sodium is often a concern for people, and when you’re making the dish yourself, you can control the ingredients. Others like to make big batches of soup and freeze portions for later meals.
It can also be less expensive to make your own soup- and it’s a great way to use up vegetables or other ingredients you have on hand.
Don’t forget…
Whether you make your own soup or buy it pre-made from a store, remember to scan the items you purchase. Sometimes the items you buy for soups, like vegetables, might not have barcodes on them- but you should still report those purchases.
If you need help with items that don’t have barcodes, check out the Non-Barcoded Items list in the app. You can also watch our video about non-barcoded items for additional help.
And, if you have a great recipe for soup, let me know in the comments! I’d love to find new ones to try this winter!
Regards,
Taylor

Frequently Asked Questions: NCP Scanning
James from National Consumer Panel answers some of the questions panel members frequently ask us about scanning, including:
✔ Why can’t I just scan my receipt?
✔ What if I forget to scan an item or a shopping trip?
✔ Is there anything I shouldn’t scan?
✔ Why won’t the app accept barcodes that contain letters?
Watch this video for answers to these common questions about reporting purchases!

Hi, it’s James from NCP. Today I’m here to share with you some of the questions that our panel members frequently ask us about scanning and give you the answers. You never know, you just might find some information you’ve been looking for! Now, let’s get to it.
Why can’t I just scan my receipt?
Panel members frequently ask us why they can’t just scan the receipt instead of scanning each individual item. When you scan each individual item’s barcode, it provides NCP with far more details about an item than a receipt would, such as the size, flavor, weight, color, and much more. Entering individual items also tells manufacturers and retailers about your shopping preferences, which in turn shapes what they offer to consumers like you.
What if I forget to scan an item or a shopping trip?
If you forget to scan an item or two from a shopping trip, simply start a new shopping trip and scan the items, then enter the same total amount spent that you did in the original shopping trip. If you forget to scan an entire shopping trip, report the trip as as soon as you remember. You can use your receipt as a guide.
Is there anything I shouldn’t scan?
Yes, there are some instances in which you would not scan your purchases. Purchases for a business or organization you belong to, such as a school organization or nonprofit, should not be scanned. Also, don’t scan gifts you receive. Only scan gifts you buy for others as those are purchases you made. Lastly, NCP does not collect information on services such as hair salons, nail salons, car washes, automotive repair shops, and so on.
Why won’t the app accept barcodes that contain numbers and letters?
The NCP mobile app is unable to scan alpha numeric barcodes at this time. We are working on a solution to this, but in the meantime, if there’s an alpha numeric barcode label over the UPC barcode try to remove it and scan the UPC barcode underneath. If you’re unable to remove the alpha numeric barcode label, please check the non-barcoded items list for an appropriate category to report the purchase.
We hope that this breakdown of common scanning questions was helpful to you! Do you have any questions or issues that have come up for you while scanning? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for watching.

Buying in Bulk
Bulk buying has become more popular over the years. So what exactly is bulk buying? Bulk buying refers to buying larger quantities of goods at one time. These items can include food and beverages, household/cleaning supplies, office supplies, etc. Why has buying in bulk become increasingly popular? Panel Member Information
Please remember to scan all of the items you buy in bulk quantities. These types of items are often overlooked when it comes to scanning because they‘re frequently brought directly from the car to where they are going to be stored (basement, shed, garage). And, here at NCP, we know that scanning large shopping trips can pose a challenge. Please take a look at our BLOG on this topic, we think you will find it helpful!
Best regards,
Taylor

New Year’s Resolutions – Do you make them?
I used to make New Year’s resolutions, but I usually ended up never following through. So, I decided to give them up altogether. But that doesn’t mean I don’t set personal goals for myself or make lists of things I want to do, and places I want to go, throughout the year (just not at the start of each new year!).
You can set goals at any time, or not at all.
Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Let me know in the comment section below. What are you looking forward to in 2024?
Popular New Year’s Resolutions

NCP Panel Membership Tips/Goals For The New Year
Here are some tips/goals to help you make the most of your panel membership in the new year. As a NCP panel member, you have the unique opportunity to make your consumer voice heard and influence what you see on store shelves. And, your household represents other households just like yours across the U.S.
Consistent and accurate reporting of your shopping trips each week is the key to getting the most out of your panel membership and accumulating reward points.
Scan purchases from all types of stores. And, scan purchases made by other household members, too.
Scan every shopping trip, large or small.
Carefully chose the correct store name from your store list. If you can’t find the name of the store you shopped at, then choose the generic store type (such as food store, department store, drugstore, etc.).
If you use coupons or get special deals such as store sales or other discounts, be sure to include that information when scanning.
Scan UPC-barcoded items, and report non-barcoded items as well, using the Non-Barcoded Items list in the NCPMobile app or the Barcode Reference Booklet if you use NCP’s handheld scanner (if you switched from using the scanner to using the app, please don’t use the booklet anymore).
Participate in NCP’s special games/promotions.
Answer all the NCP surveys you receive.
If you can’t scan for a period of time for any reason, please be sure to contact our Panel Support Center to let them know so your membership will remain in good standing.
I hope you found these tips/goals to be helpful!
If you’re not a NCP panel member and you’re interested in joining, click here to sign up or go to the Join NCP page of the blog for more information.
All the best in 2024,
Taylor
