The Sweet World of Pies

The Sweet World of Pies

I’ll admit it – I’m a huge fan of all kinds of pies! Apple, blueberry, key lime, and pumpkin are at the top of my list, but I’d never say no to a slice of almost any pie! I’m already planning to bring a few pies to Thanksgiving dinner next week, and I’ll make sure I don’t forget the whipped cream and vanilla ice cream to go with them! Yum!

What’s your favorite kind of pie? Let me know in the comment section, I would love to hear from you!

Popular Pie Flavors

What do you think are the most popular pie flavors? Take a look at this list from goldbelly.com and see if you agree.

Key Lime Pie
Apple Pie
Pecan Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Cherry Pie
Coconut Cream Pie
Boston Cream Pie (technically a cake!)
Berry Pies (including blueberry, strawberry, mixed berry, strawberry rhubarb, etc.)
Chocolate Cream Pie

Fun Facts About Pie

I found these fun facts about pie from the American Pie Council to be interesting, I hope you do, too!

– As of November 2023, the top five most Googled pies were Pumpkin pie, Apple pie, Pecan pie, Cherry pie, and Lemon Meringue pie.

– Approximately 2 billion dollars in pies are sold in grocery stores every year.

– According to an American Pie Council survey, pie isn’t just an after-dinner dessert. Thirty-five percent of Americans said they’ve eaten pie for breakfast. Eating pie for lunch (66%) and midnight snacks (59%) were also popular responses.

– Pie was not always America’s favorite dessert. In the 19th Century, fruit pies were a common breakfast food eaten before the start of a long day.

– Pumpkin pie was first introduced to the holiday table at the pilgrims’ second Thanksgiving in 1623.

Popular Thanksgiving Pies

According to an article published on newsweek.com, here are some of the popular Thanksgiving pie choices across the country.

– Pumpkin pie continues to be the preferred Thanksgiving dessert in many parts of the U.S., especially across the Midwest and Western states, and is the most popular Thanksgiving pie across the country.

– Pecan pie is the leading Thanksgiving dessert choice in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

– Apple pie is the go-to Thanksgiving dessert in the Northeast states including Maine, New York, and Massachusetts.

– Some states in the Southeast such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, showed a close preference for both apple and pecan pies, with pumpkin pie notably less popular.

Info for Panel Members

Whether you make your own pies from scratch or purchase them already prepared, please remember to tell us about all your purchases, especially those made for the holidays.

If you purchase a pie that doesn’t have a UPC barcode, you can still tell us about the purchase by using the Non-Barcoded Items list in the NCPMobile app (Pies are listed in the Baked Goods category). If you use NCP’s handheld scanner, please refer to the Barcode Reference Booklet. Need more information? Check out our video about reporting non-barcoded items.

No matter what kind of pie you prefer, savor every bite! The pie’s the limit!

Regards,
Taylor

My Grandmother was a baker. I would get up at 3 am with her and make all of the daily breads and baked goods for the day.. because my Grandad went to work early and what I loved most was her Fruit Pies 🥧 😋 They were Delicious!! I will do them for Christmas Day!!

I got Married when I was 20 in April of 1998 we had one child and one on the way. I didn’t know much about cooking and did my best to make our first thanksgiving feast as a family memorable. Well 27 years later all I remember is the pie. My son and my husband both loved pineapple so I found a recipe for pineapple cream pie and got my grandma’s recipe for a homemade crust and I gave it my best shot well 17 years of marriage, 4 kids, 3 states and 1 divorce later the pineapple cream pie is still a tradition to our thanksgiving. I still make it to honor the time we shared as a family and to reassure my children that the love I put into that very first pie still goes in to every single one! And I am just as thankful today as I was the first day we became a family!

I remember growing up with sweet potato pie and I still love it. A lot of people don’t know how to make it just right but a few do. When I was little we would go out cherry Hill on Thanksgiving and some Sundays and my grandmother’s aunt’s would be cooking up a storm. Homemade sweet potato pie and banana pudding were just two of my favorites. They also had butter cream cakes, pineapple upside down cake and a host of other goodies all from scratch. Those ladies would start cooking a few days before and the whole house would smell so good when you walked in the door. This was the 1970s and I used to love going to their house. As I got older my uncle PHILLIP(Hester son,)and cousins (Maggie’s daughters)ROSEMARY and MARGARET (Sisters Hester and Maggie were the nieces of the ladies in Cherry Hill ) were the holiday cooks in the family after aunt Maggie got older and couldn’t. Since my uncle PHILLIP is gone the food doesn’t taste like it used to as I was growing up. I’ve had a good sweet potato pie and banana pudding from my oldest son’s aunt Linda that was good but that was over 2 years ago. It’s hard to find a few good ones that remind me of past times and taste good too but I’m on the lookout for some. Maybe someone can suggest where to go.

Apple and Sweet Potato Pies are my favorite. That noted, I love all kinds of pies – including the savory ones. The crust is equally important.

My favorites are pumpkin, blueberry and lemon meringue. Pumpkin hands down for Thanksgiving. I’ve been known to eat a slice of pumpkin pie every morning until the pie is gone. A dear friend shared a family recipe of a friend for homemade mincemeat for mincemeat pie. The kind that uses special suet. We get together to make it every now and again. I used to be the pie lady for baking pies for our Thanksgiving dinner. I have a folder more than an inch thick with pie recipes.

I absolutely love family recipes. Even if the ingredients and directions are the same as one found online or suggested by someone else – just knowing that the one I’m serving and enjoying myself is the one passed down to me – makes each bite taste so much better! ❤️
