Before I get to the pet food info, as a follow up to the National Dog Day blog (August 26th), I’d like to share photos that were sent to us from the proud owners of these beautiful dogs! Check out what their owners had to say about them.
Athena: Catherine T. told us, “Athena is 8 years old. We have had her since birth. She has brought us so much joy. She is a really fast runner, we say “zoom zoom” and off she goes around our house a few times! We love her to pieces!!!!!”
Nashville: Catherine C. told us, “This is my baby boy Nashville. He’s three years old and loves to play frisbee with dad and play smother mother with kisses with me.”
Jody: Brenda told us, “My new 4-month-old Siberian husky boy. He’s much bigger than any puppy I ever had. His name is Jody. Those ears have been the topic of jokes from day one. I think he is mixed with Shepherd.”
Cara: Jillian told us, “Cara is very loving and playful. She loves to throw her toys up in the air and chase them. I love her so much.”
Pet Food Trends
I came across some interesting stats about pet food trends and insights that were shared by NielsenIQ (2023). I thought I would share them with you. In the comment section below, please share any thoughts you have about pet food in general and if any of these trends relate to what you buy for your pet(s).
So, what impacts pet food trends? The type of pet, the pet food product formulation, the marketing of the pet food, and how it is delivered to market all have a major impact.
There are also some factors that influence growth and in demand in the pet food market including the increasing popularity of pets, the growing awareness of the importance of pet nutrition, and the rising demand for premium and specialized pet foods.
Let’s take a look at five (5) key trends when it comes to pet food.
Dominance of Online Shopping
Online shopping sales of pet food are driving growth trends, with more pet owners choosing to buy pet food online. Although online shopping sales dominate growth trends, in-store shopping sales still make up the majority of dollars spent.
Slow Rise of Natural and Grain-Free Pet Food Options
For the past few years, more consumers have been adopting a grain-free diet for their pets out of health concerns. In 2023, natural and grain-free pet food was still growing, although it remains a smaller part of pet food options.
Freeze-Dried Choices Seeing Major Traction
The biggest driver behind the growth of freeze-dried pet food is the consumer’s desire for raw pet food. Most freeze-dried foods are dehydrated raw foods and are a convenient way for the consumer to stick with a raw food diet for their pet.
Pet Food Innovation
One of the largest growth areas in pet food innovation is alternative protein sources in the pet food (plant-based proteins). Another important innovation is personalized nutrition for pets.
Dry Pet Food vs. Wet Pet Food
Data shows that both dry and wet pet food options are seeing strong growth year over year, with dry food still slightly leading the way.

I’ve started a pet scrapbook! It’s a fun way to document all the silly moments
I prefer in-person shopping most of the time. It’s all I do now since finding out that my local Williams Lumber store stocks a wider variety of pet food and accessories than anywhere I’ve visited. They’re so welcoming to me and my dogs.
I have been following the grain-free articles closely. My vet has not yet recommended them for my cats, but it sure has been eye-opening to read about. When I had shepherds, they always had skin allergies until I switched to making their food along with ours. Always fun cooking turkey out of season and making the neighbor’s mouths water!
Very interesting I enjoy reading about different info about pets
