Thanksgiving is coming soon! The holiday is a time for families and friends to come together to express gratitude for the blessings in their lives. The day traditionally includes a large meal featuring roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
While the meal is often the focus at Thanksgiving, the holiday also brings many other traditions and activities. Some people like to watch the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which showcases giant balloons, elaborate floats, and musical performances. Football games are another beloved aspect, with the NFL hosting matchups that have become a Thanksgiving Day tradition. Still others choose to give back to their communities by volunteering at soup kitchens or donating to food drives, emphasizing the spirit of generosity and gratitude.

Thanksgiving Meal
Did you know that Thanksgiving is the second-largest food holiday of the year, after Christmas? According to Circana, food and beverage sales increased by 2.4 billion dollars last year for the week of Thanksgiving and the week before. Most people buy their sides and main dish items, such as turkey and ham, the week before Thanksgiving. However, shoppers are more likely to purchase beverages, pies, and baking products the week of Thanksgiving.
What types of food do you enjoy at Thanksgiving? Here are some of the popular items on the menu:
– Turkey
– Ham
– Mashed potatoes
– Salads
– Breads, buns and rolls
– Macaroni & cheese
– Cranberry sauce
– Green bean casserole
– Pies (pecan, pumpkin, and apple)
Does your family stick to the traditional Thanksgiving menu, or do you enjoy serving something different?
Thanksgiving Trends
How has your Thanksgiving celebration changed or evolved through the years? My family has always gathered for a traditional, homemade meal. However, a newer tradition that I’m enjoying is “Friendsgiving,” when our close friends get together for a potluck meal the week before Thanksgiving. Last year, everyone brought their favorite soup. This year, we’re all bringing appetizers and dips!
Here is some other interesting information about Thanksgiving trends from Circana:
– 61% of Americans plan to eat their main Thanksgiving meal at home
– 79% of consumers report they and their families will celebrate Thanksgiving with the usual traditions
– 34% of consumers anticipate spending more on groceries this year but are unlikely to cut back on their purchases
– 68% of respondents will buy new holiday tableware
– 79% of consumers will enjoy a completely homemade Thanksgiving meal
– 33% enjoy cooking the same recipes each year, while 28% enjoy trying new recipes
As Thanksgiving continues to evolve, it remains a cherished celebration centered around food, family, and traditions. While the classic turkey dinner and beloved side dishes keep our tables filled, new consumer trends like plant-based options and online shopping sales have also become part of the holiday.
Whether it’s gathering with loved ones for a hearty meal, watching a parade or football game, or snagging a Black Friday deal, the spirit of Thanksgiving lies in the gratitude we share and the connections we nurture. As we honor both the past and present, this holiday serves as a reminder to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the abundance in our lives, while also embracing new ways of celebrating togetherness.

Taylor
