Earth Day is Saturday, April 22nd. A day to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote actions to protect our planet.
In what ways do you celebrate Earth Day or help protect our planet each and every day? Do you reduce, reuse and recycle? Let me know in the comment section below, I would love to hear some of the things you do and your ideas.
How did Earth Day come about?
I did some research on the origin of Earth Day and found this excerpt from the earthday.org site that I thought explains it well.
“Senator Gaylord Nelson, the junior senator from Wisconsin, had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment in the United States. Then in January 1969, he and many others witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a teach-in on college campuses to the national media, and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. They recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize the campus teach-ins and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximize the greatest student participation.“
Did you know that Earth Day is now celebrated in more than 190 countries around the world? Wow!
Ways to make it Earth Day every day
Protecting the environment matters. Here are some things you can do to protect the Earth every day*.
– Look for ways you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle throughout your home. You’ll save natural resources, energy and money, and you’ll reduce waste sent to landfills.
– Conserve energy. Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
– Reduce paper waste and junk mail. Think twice before printing things at work and home. You can also reduce mail by using online payment options that avoid paper bills.
– Recycle your electronics. Old, unused or broken computers, tablets, phones and other electronics can often be recycled for free by stores, manufacturers and local governments, which saves natural resources while also reducing pollution.
– Give your car a break. Walk, ride a bike, carpool or take public transportation.
– Turn off the tap. Turn off the water when it’s not needed, for example, when brushing your teeth.
– Replace light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and LED bulbs may cost more than incandescent bulbs, but they will save money over the long run, last longer, and use up to 90 percent less energy.
– Get involved in environmental work in your local community.

Remember: Any small action to protect our planet really makes a difference.
All the best,

It’s great to see people caring about the earth.
I love being in nature. Sometimes well grab a bag and pick up some trash. Any and all clothes go to a charity/help community. We recycle as much as possible.
I have known of this problem ever since I was a very young child. I still remember the old American Indian with the one tear rolling down his cheek as he surveys the land that he loved so much and how badly it’s being destroyed by man kind. It was one of the most powerful advertisements I ever saw on TV. it has left a lasting impression with me ever since I was was a young child. We recycle all the bottles in the apartment (glass, plastic and aluminum). When given the choice we choose the option in the recycled packaging. We reuse all the plastic bags using them either as trash can liners, carrying things or just storing things in. All our bulbs use LED lamps and one of the biggest things I do is I own a 2016 Prius which I bought brand new. I make a very concerted effort to keep the car in electric mode as much as I possibly can. I feel better knowing that anywhere I have to go I’m driving a vehicle that adds to the solution not make the situation worse.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are my new to do list. We certainly do our part.
I’ve been teaching my young babes about bettering the planet. Reusing as much as we can in every way, picking up trash we find on the shore from the lake (sadly there’s a lot – including cigarette butts). Walking to where we can. Planting in our garden. Even educated my husband about Reduce Reuse Recycle that I learned 20 years ago 😁
EXCELLENT Earth Day Information- I wasn’t aware that it’s been 50 years now! I especially loved the reminder of the 3 R’s & the statistics that were listed.
I take advantage of every offer I find to plant a tree.
Making every day Earth Day seems like it is more important and urgent every year!
This year we used all our cardboard boxes, styrofoam and bubble wrap from purchases to insulate walls in our workshop in South Dakota!
That’s a great use for those items, thanks for sharing!
I really enjoy this app it’s so useful and exciting
