I can’t believe it’s May already and that Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. This year is flying by. I am hoping to find some time to relax and, above all, not have to decide what’s for dinner!

If you’re celebrating Mother’s Day, are you going out, staying in, ordering takeout, etc.? Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear from you!

Dining Out

According to a survey* conducted in April by the National Restaurant Association, consumers say restaurants will play a big role in how they celebrate Mom this year.

Of the survey respondents planning to take moms to a restaurant for a special Mother’s Day meal or meals:

48% are expecting to take them out for a celebratory lunch
45% will go out for dinner
30% plan to opt for brunch
21% will celebrate at breakfast

Some other interesting findings:
27% of respondents overall plan to visit a restaurant for Mother’s Day this year
18% say they’ll order takeout or delivery from a restaurant
38% expect to eat a home-cooked meal at their home or someone else’s home

*Numbers may add up to more than 100% because some consumers plan to dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery more than once on Mother’s Day.

Top Gifts

According to the National Retail Federation’s annual Mother’s Day survey, the top 3 gift categories are:

Greeting Cards
Flowers
Special Outings

Info For NCP Panel Members

Speaking of dining out and buying fresh flowers and plants, these items usually don’t have a barcode. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind NCP panel members that you can report items you buy that don’t have a barcode or have a barcode that is not a UPC barcode and won’t scan.

If you use the NCPMobile App, in the app’s Non-Barcoded Items List:

  • Choose the “Floral” category for living plant and fresh flower purchases that don’t have a UPC barcode. Do not choose this category for purchases of plant food, potting soil, fake flowers/plants, planting pots, and other items of this nature since these items have a UPC barcode.
  • Choose the “Take Out – Home Delivery” category if you pre-ordered food from a restaurant/fast food establishment and had it delivered to your home.
  • Choose the “Take Out – Pick Up/Eat In” category if you ordered food by phone/app, drive-thru or inside the establishment for pick up or to eat-in.

If you use NCP’s handheld scanner, in the Barcode Reference Booklet:

  • Scan the “Floral” barcode to report living plant and flower purchases that don’t have a UPC barcode. Do not scan this barcode to record purchases of plant food, potting soil, fake flowers/plants, planting pots, and other items of this nature since these items have a UPC barcode.
  • Scan the “Take Out – Home Delivery” barcode if you pre-ordered food from a restaurant/fast food establishment and had it delivered to your home.
  • Scan the “Take Out – Pick Up/Eat In” barcode if you ordered food by phone/app, drive-thru or inside the establishment for pick up or to eat-in.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

Best regards,
Taylor
