As I’m sure you know, it’s difficult trying to find the time to get something healthy on the dinner table. So that’s why the meal kit market has exploded recently. Meal kits, which are easy-to-prepare “kits” that are filled with fresh, pre-portioned ingredients, make it easy to create a healthy “home cooked” meal.
Originally a mostly web-based offering, meal kits are now often showing up in retail outlets.
According to the latest Nielsen data, 187 new meal kit items were introduced within in-store retail outlets alone during the 52 weeks ended Dec. 29, 2018.
Interest in meal kits through both online and retail outlets continues to be strong. According to NCP data, meal kit users have increased 36% over the past year. In fact, NCP data estimates that 14.3 million households purchased meal kits in the last six months of 2018, reflecting a marked increase of 3.8 million households from the end of 2017. And there is still a lot more interest beyond that, with 23% of American households saying they would consider purchasing a meal kit within the next six months.
So have you purchased any meal kits? If you’re an NCPMobile App user, you can use the Non-Barcoded Items listing to record these types of purchases! (See image below.)
Note: If you use the Barcode Reference Booklet to record non-UPC barcoded items, you cannot tell us about meal kit purchases at this time. The booklet might be updated in the near future.
Thanks, and have a great weekend!
Best Regards,
Taylor
I use Meal kits – so convenient! I like Purple Carrot! It is vegan/plant based. A little pricey, though worth it.
My husband and I have tried several of the meal kits. We keep coming back to Hello Fresh. It was a while before I found how to select and report it. We used to get it weekly, but have backed off since I retired. Well worth what they charge.
I USED HELLO FRESH AN HOME CHEF THEY BOTH WHER GOOD UNTIL THEY GOT HURT. BUT THEY NEVER GOT HURT LIKE SWISS COLONY OH BOY WHERE THEY GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT CARS. THE MONEY I PAID WAS STOLEN AND PUT ON THERE ACCOUNT INSIDE THE COMPANY. OUCH
I have in the past used Blue Apron and Home Chef. My local grocery store carries meal kits as well, but I’ve not tried those because they’re always the same and badly loaded with carbs and I have no intention of gaining weight. My favorite meals have been from Home Chef because they have more to choose from and not all are laden with tons of carbs. Blue Apron is a little cheaper, but again lots of carbs here and their selections of vegetables in their meals are a bit boring; not much variety. I was getting meal kits mainly to learn to cook more variety meals; things I’ve never tried before from other countries as well and Home Chef offers lots of variety with this. Only wish I have is that someone starts making kits for singles; it would make me buy them more often and probably more than the minimum requirement per shipment.
Can you tell us what store you would like us to choose for these? Is online shopping ok if I have a subscription?
Hi, as for what store to choose, use the specific name of the site/place you purchased the items from. Or, choose “All Other” if it’s not listed anywhere.
And it is ok if you have a subscription. Hope that helps. If not, please contact us at 800-962-6700 for more help.
Thanks!
Taylor
