Every year on August 26th, dog lovers across the country come together to celebrate National Dog Day; a day dedicated to honoring our furry companions and recognizing the countless ways they enrich our lives. From loyal best friends who greet us at the door, to hardworking service dogs who provide safety and support, dogs play extraordinary roles in our world. National Dog Day also shines a light on the importance of adoption and the millions of dogs waiting for a forever home.
The day was founded in 2004 by pet & family lifestyle expert, animal rescue advocate, conservationist, dog trainer and author, Colleen Paige. August 26th is the date that Colleen’s family adopted their first dog “Sheltie” from a local animal shelter when Colleen was 10 years old.
If you own one or more dogs, you know that every day is a day to celebrate these beloved members of your family! Let us know a little about your special furry friend(s) in the comment section below!

Fun Facts About Dogs
I came across some interesting facts about dogs as shared by dogster.com. Let’s take a look at a few of them.
🦴Dogs are directly descended from wolves – many breeds show a striking resemblance to their wolf ancestors, such as the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamute, and the German Shepherd.
🦴There are over 75 million pet dogs in the United States – more than in any other country in the world.
🦴Dogs can detect disease in humans – they can be trained to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
🦴Roughly 45% of dogs in the United States sleep in their owner’s bed – our furry friends have a way of making it into our hearts and our beds.
🦴Humans and dogs can improve each other’s health – studies have shown that a human’s blood pressure goes down when petting a dog, and so does the dog’s.
🦴There are 18 muscles in a dog’s ear – these muscles help them to change the direction of their ears slightly to hear noises surrounding them.
