Each year for Father’s Day, millions of Americans take the opportunity to show their appreciation through thoughtful gestures and gifts. Once marked by the classic necktie and a heartfelt card, this day has evolved into a major retail moment. Whether it’s a special dinner, the latest gadget, or a memorable experience, the way we honor dad has changed.
Manufacturers and retailers pay close attention to this holiday, not only because it boosts mid-year sales, but also because it gives them a view of what’s trending with shoppers. Are shoppers choosing experiences over physical gifts? Are luxury or tech items gaining popularity over traditional items?
With Father’s Day right around the corner on Sunday, June 15th, let’s take a look at some of the shopping trends surrounding the holiday, along with the latest stats.
When and Where People are Shopping
According to research by NielsenIQ, nearly 9-in-10 shoppers planned to complete their Father’s Day purchases within the month before the holiday, and almost 1-in-4 shoppers said they would wait until the week before Father’s Day to finalize their purchase.
Purchase decisions are influenced by both in-store and online browsing, with 69% of consumers expecting to look around stores in person and 66% exploring shopping websites. Social media and influencers play a significant role in shaping consumer choices.

What People are Buying
For Father’s Day, gifts of apparel and footwear, along with men’s fragrances, are among the top choices. Gift cards, sporting goods, hobby items, home improvement items, or tools are also common choices. Other popular gift choices include tech gadgets, especially among male consumers, with 50% of tech shoppers choosing to buy headphones, fitness and wellness wearables, and smart home devices. Female shoppers are more likely to purchase personalized keepsakes.
What’s Being Spent?
NielsenIQ’s analysis found that nearly all consumers expect to spend at least as much as they did last year, with 47% anticipating they will spend even more. The average expected to be spent is approximately $224. But, inflation and high prices are significant factors affecting Father’s Day spending, with 1-in-2 consumers saying economic challenges will impact their purchasing decisions.
More Than a Price Tag
Whether it’s a big-ticket item, a home-cooked meal, or a shared experience, the thought behind the gift carries the most weight. Because in the end, it’s not just about how much we spend, but how we choose to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, father figures, etc. in our lives.
