Walking is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to boost your health. You don’t need a gym membership, fancy equipment, or hours of free time—just a pair of comfortable shoes and a little motivation.
Many of our panel members are already reaping the benefits of walking. When we surveyed panel members for our Spotlight on States series, we asked what type of outdoor activities they enjoyed. For every single state, hiking or walking came out on top as the most popular outdoor activity.
Whether you’re strolling through your neighborhood, power walking at the park, or simply adding steps throughout your day, walking can make a big difference for your body and mind. Let’s take a look at some of the ways walking can help improve your health and your mood.
Health Benefits of Walking
Walking helps strengthen your heart, improve circulation, and lower blood pressure. According to the Cleveland Clinic, research shows that brisk walking for 30 minutes each day can lead to many long-term health benefits. It’s a gentle way to maintain a healthy weight and keep your metabolism active. Regular walking also supports bone and joint health, easing stiffness and reducing your risk of osteoporosis.
It’s not just your body that benefits—your brain does too! I’m a firm believer in walking for better mental health. My dogs would agree with this, as they also benefit from my commitment to walking! Walking boosts endorphins, which can ease stress, improve your mood, and even help with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Many people find that a walk clears their head and sparks creativity, making it a great “reset” during busy days.
Consistent walking lowers the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Research has also linked regular walking to healthier aging and longer life expectancy.
Walking isn’t just good exercise—it’s also a way to connect. Whether you’re walking with a friend, family member, or your dog, it creates space for conversation and quality time. Walking outdoors helps you explore new places, get some fresh air, and unplug from technology. Plus, it can double as productive “thinking time” or even a moving meeting. For me, it’s a great way to read more books, because I usually listen to an audiobook while walking.
Tips for Getting Started
Start small: You don’t have to start off with a miles-long hike. Try a shorter 10-15 minute walk each day and gradually increase your time.
Set goals: Use step counts or mileage goals to stay motivated. Find an accountability partner and compete with each other in steps or mileage!
Sneak in steps: Park farther away in parking lots, take the stairs instead of an elevator, or walk while you’re on a phone call. Even if you can’t carve out extra time in your day for a walk, you can probably find a way to get some extra steps in.
Be consistent: Building a habit requires consistency. Even if you can only get in ten minutes of walking each day, that’s better than nothing.
Optional Gear to Make Walks Even Better
One of the best things about walking is that you don’t need much besides a good pair of shoes. But if you want to add a little comfort, safety, or motivation, here are some popular extras:
Comfy shoes & socks: A cushioned pair of sneakers and moisture-wicking socks help prevent sore feet and blisters.
Weather gear: A light rain jacket, breathable layers, or reflective bands for low-light walks. Don’t forget the sunscreen and hats!
Fitness trackers & apps: Step counters or smartwatches can make reaching daily goals more fun.
Hydration helpers: Reusable water bottles or small hydration belts for longer strolls.
Safety tools: Reflective vests, clip-on lights, or even a personal safety alarm if you often walk alone.
Entertainment: Wireless earbuds or a phone armband so you can enjoy podcasts, music, or audiobooks hands-free. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings if you’re using headphones.
And don’t forget your furry friends! If you walk with dogs, like I do, be sure to bring disposable waste bags.
Let’s Go For a Walk!
Are you motivated to squeeze more steps into your day? I certainly am! Whether you’re already walking regularly or want to get started, I hope the tips in this blog will help you out.
