Memorial Day weekend is also referred to as the “unofficial” start of summer with many people gathering together for parades, BBQs, parties, picnics, etc., or traveling to visit family and friends.

59% of Americans plan to BBQ over the Memorial Day weekend
$1.7 billion will be spent on purchasing meat for Memorial Day
818 hot dogs are consumed every second from Memorial Day through Labor Day (7 billion total)
AAA predicts 39.2 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend. Despite historic gas prices, 34.9 million people plan to travel by car, up 4.6% over last year. A greater portion of travelers are opting for air and other modes of travel than in previous years. Air travel continues to rebound, up 25% over last year.

We know you’ll probably be busy this Memorial Day weekend, but we want to remind you to scan all of your regular purchases, along with any you make for the holiday weekend.
Besides the food purchases including meats, condiments (mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, etc.), vegetables, seafood, etc., other non-food purchases might include charcoal, lighter fluid, paper products, insect repellent, sunscreen, outdoor games, and so on.
If you’re traveling by car, don’t forget, you can also record gas purchases using the Gas category in the Non-Barcoded Items list if you use the NCPMobile App or in the Barcode Reference Booklet if you use NCP’s handheld scanner.
Select “Gas Trip Only” if you only purchased gas during a trip to the gas station and no other items.
Select “Gas With Purchase” if you purchased gas along with other items from the gas station’s convenience store.
You should even scan items “on the run” which we refer to as items that don’t make it home. This might include stopping on the way to a BBQ or party to pick up a dessert or beverages, or, if you’re traveling, stopping at a roadside rest area for a snack, gum, soda, water, etc.

I am planning to plant a garden also. Tomatoes, pepper, various other plants toom
I rarely eat a hot dog.
I plan to start planting my veggies in my oh so weedy garden. Lots of hard work there, but it will be such a reward to have fresh veggies that I grew myself. I used to always have a beautiful garden but I’m getting older and it is much harder now. Plus I don’t feed children anymore so we don’t need a lot. Still, a couple tomatoes, peppers, carrots and some squash…..YUM
