Ohio was the 17th state to join the union on March 1, 1803. Columbus is the state capital and its largest city. Ohio is the 34th largest state and is bordered by the U.S states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan.
Ohio gets its name from the Ohio River, which in turn, derives its name from the Seneca (Iroquois) word “ohi:yo”, meaning “good river” or “great river.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of Ohio is 11,883,304 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 7th most populous state.

Fun Facts about Ohio
– Ohio’s state flag is the only U.S. state flag that is not a rectangle.
– Ohio’s nickname, “The Buckeye State,” comes from the plentiful Ohio buckeye trees, whose nuts resemble a deer’s eye. The term “Buckeyes” is also used to refer to Ohio residents and the sports teams of The Ohio State University.
– Seven U.S. presidents were born in Ohio: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Warren G. Harding.
– Dayton is considered the birthplace of aviation, as it was the hometown of the Wright brothers.

Shopping Habits of NCP Panel Members in Ohio
We asked panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their shopping habits.
Here’s what our panel members in Ohio had to say about their shopping habits:
When asked how they do most of their shopping, 59% of respondents said they do a combo of online and in-store shopping. 37% said they shop in-store only and 4% said they shop online only.
65% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores vs. 35% who said they shop at a variety of stores.
74% of respondents said they mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
65% of respondents said they shop alone, with another 24% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 55% of the Ohio panel members who responded said they primarily shop at grocery stores and 32% at mass-merchandise retailers.
Price, convenience and location were the top factors that influence where they decide to shop. Most of our Ohio panel members said they shop 1-3 times a week for groceries and do most of their shopping on Wednesdays or Fridays.
About 93% of survey respondents look for ways to save money while shopping, with digital coupons and joining a store’s loyalty program being the most popular options. They also use paper coupons, use the store sales flyer to plan their list, shop at multiple stores, and subscribe to store emails.
Convenience while shopping
Here’s what Ohio panel members had to say about different aspects of shopping:
67% never order groceries online to pick up at the store, while 21% sometimes do.
65% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 24% sometimes do.
When asked if weather influenced their choice between online and in-person shopping, 32% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 39% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
When asked about self-checkout, 22% of respondents said they always use self-checkout, 41% indicated they frequently use it. 26% of respondents said they rarely use it, and 11% said they never use it.
Interests of NCP panel members in Ohio
When asked about the outdoors, 41% said they occasionally participate in outdoor recreational activities. The most popular outdoor activities were hiking/walking (81%), swimming, and cycling. Other activities panel members wrote in were gardening, camping and fishing.
When asked which sports or events they follow, the top responses were football, baseball and basketball. Panel members also wrote in college and Olympic sports as sports that they follow.
We also asked what “type” of place or tourist attraction would they recommend to people visiting their state/hometown. The most popular responses were restaurants/culinary places and local markets, natural parks and reserves, and historical and cultural museums, and cultural events and local festivals.
