North Dakota is a landlocked state in the upper Midwest. It was named after the indigenous Dakota and Sioux people, and it is bordered by Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and Canada. North Dakota is the 19th-largest state by area, but is the fourth-least populated and fourth-most sparsely populated with a population of just under 800,000 people.
North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, as the 39th state. Bismarck is the state capital, while Fargo is the largest city. Both cities are among the fastest-growing in the United States.

Fun Facts about North Dakota
North Dakota is the No. 1 producer of honey in the nation.
Little Missouri National Grasslands is the largest grassland in the United States at more than 1 million acres and one of three grasslands in North Dakota.
The Enchanted Highway is a collection of the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures constructed at intervals along a 32-mile stretch of two-lane highway in the southwestern part of the state.
North Dakota holds the Guinness World Record for the most snow angels made simultaneously in one place. On February 17, 2007, 8,962 people made snow angels at the state capitol grounds beating the previous record of 3,784.
World’s Largest Buffalo monument stands tall on the hill in Jamestown. This 26-foot-tall, 60-ton concrete giant has been standing watch over Jamestown since 1959.
North Dakota is home to more wildlife refuges (63) than any other state. Wildlife viewing and birding opportunities are abundant.
The International Peace Garden is a beautiful symbol of peace and friendship straddling the U.S. and Canadian border of North Dakota and Manitoba.
The world’s largest french fry feed is held every year in Grand Forks, during Potato Bowl USA. A new record was set on September 10, 2015, when 5,220 pounds of french fries were served.
Famous people from North Dakota include actors Angie Dickinson, Leslie Bibb, and Josh Duhamel; author Louis L’Amour; baseball player Roger Maris; and television personality Lawrence Welk.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in North Dakota
Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.
Here’s what our panel members in North Dakota had to say about their shopping habits:
– 68% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 30% shopping in-store only.
– 60% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 70% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 66% of respondents shop alone, with another 22% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 52% of panel members shop mostly at mass-merchandise retailers. Another 26% primarily shop at grocery stores. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are the weather and the quality of the store and its items.
Convenience while shopping
While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.
Here’s what North Dakota panel members had to say about it:
– 70% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 20% do sometimes.
– 56% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 28% do sometimes.
We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 30% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 36% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 26% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 48% indicating they frequently choose it. 16% of respondents rarely use it, and 10% never do.
Interests of NCP panel members in North Dakota
Here are a few other fun facts about North Dakota panel members from our survey!
More than half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 73% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include fishing, camping, backpacking, and hunting.
We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 46% said none, while 40% said football. Some of the other sports panelists follow are their kids’ sports, wrestling, and horse racing.
We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in North Dakota are natural parks and reserves. Here are some of the answers we got from panel members:
