Nevada became the 36th state on Oct. 31, 1864. It ranks seventh among our states in total land area. Nevada shares borders with Oregon and Idaho to the north, Utah to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and California to the west.
In the early 21st century, Nevada was one of the fastest-growing states in population. Its estimated population in 2023 was 3,194,176, making it the 32nd most populous state. Nevada’s capital city is Carson City, located in the western part of the state.

Fun Facts about Nevada
Nevada has 314 named mountain ranges — more mountain ranges than any other state — and 35 peaks over 10,000 feet in elevation.
Nevada is the driest state in the nation with a statewide average of 10 inches of precipitation per year.
Nevada ranks 8th for the number of butterflies found in a single state.
Measuring up to 45 inches and weighing up to 50 lbs, the Lahontan cutthroat trout, aka Nevada’s state fish, is the largest inland cutthroat trout in the world.
With over 300 hot springs, Nevada is home to more hot springs than any other state in the nation.
Nevada is the largest gold-producing state in the nation. It is second in the world behind South Africa.
The state has about 50,000 miles of paved road, much of it featured in films like “Vanishing Point,” “Breakdown,” “Rainman,” and “Lethal Weapon 4.”
Famous people from Nevada include tennis player Andre Agassi, Jimmy Kimmel, the actors Dawn Wells and Charisma Carpenter, and politician Harry Reid.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in Nevada
Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.
Here’s what our panel members in Nevada had to say about their shopping habits:
– 65% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 33% shopping in-store only.
– 69% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 69% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 61% of respondents shop alone, with another 28% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 48% of panel members shop mostly at grocery stores. Another 32% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are whether or not the store offers free delivery, sales, and variety of new products.
Convenience while shopping
While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.
Here’s what Nevada panel members had to say about it:
– 62% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 30% do sometimes.
– 61% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 29% do sometimes.
We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 44% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 28% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 22% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 43% indicating they frequently choose it. 23% of respondents rarely use it, and 12% never do.
Interests of NCP panel members in Nevada
Here are a few other fun facts about Nevada panel members from our survey!
Almost half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 77% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include dirt biking, camping, and playing at the park.
We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 49% said football, while 34% said none. Some of the other sports panelists follow are volleyball, rugby, and rodeo.
We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in Nevada are restaurants and culinary places. Here are some of the answers we got from panel members:
