On Dec. 7, 1787, Delaware became the first of the original 13 states to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It’s known as “The First State” because of this. The state’s motto is “Liberty and Independence.” The town of New Castle was originally the colonial capital, and Dover became the state’s capital in 1777.
According to the US Census Bureau, the estimated population of Delaware was 1,031,890 people in 2023. It ranks 49th among states in terms of total land area, and it’s one of the most densely populated states.

Fun Facts about Delaware
Delaware is under 100 miles long and it just 35 miles wide at its widest point.
Students in Wilmington once set a record for the world’s tallest LEGO tower. It was 113 feet tall and made from more than 500,000 LEGO bricks.
Delaware only has three counties in total, the fewest of any state.
More horseshoe crabs can be found in Delaware than anywhere in the world.
Famous people from Delaware include the actors Ryan Phillippe, Teri Polo, and Aubrey Plaza; President Joe Biden; Nancy J. Currie-Gregg, an American astronaut; and Randy White, an American football Hall of Famer.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in Delaware
Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.
Here’s what our panel members in Delaware had to say about their shopping habits:
– 64% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 33% shopping in-store only.
– 51% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 70% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 66% of respondents shop alone, with another 23% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 47% of panel members shop at grocery stores. Another 30% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop is customer service and the customer rewards programs. A majority of Delaware panel members shop just once a week.
Nearly all of our survey respondents look for ways to save money while shopping, with digital coupons and store loyalty programs being the most popular options. Other respondents shop at multiple stores, use the store sales flyer to plan their list, subscribe to store emails, and buy generic or store-brand items.
Convenience while shopping
While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.
Here’s what Delaware panel members had to say about it:
– 58% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 31% do sometimes.
– 56% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 36% do sometimes.
We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 36% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 35% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 26% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 40% indicating they frequently choose it. 27% of respondents rarely use it, and 7% never do.
Interests of NCP panel members in Delaware
Here are a few other fun facts about Delaware panel members from our survey!
More than 54% of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking- it was a favorite for 90% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include nature walks and camping.
We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 42% said football, while 43% said none. Some of the other sports panelists follow are figure skating, track and field, and sumo.
We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular type of attraction panel members recommend in Delaware is beaches and coastal areas. Here are some of the answers we got from panel members:

We are a very small state geographically but the people here have a lot of heart! I think that’s what makes us very unique as a state state.
I live in ny state and if you come to visit definitely go to New York city and explore all our attractions like the empire state building–statue of liberty– Bronx zoo etc etc…
