Who doesn’t love a good snack? When it comes to snacking, what’s your preference? Salty or sweet? For me, it’s both!

We recently asked this question on NCP’s Facebook page and most people said they like both salty and sweet snacks and their preferences change depending on their mood. Although, some did have a strong preference of one over the other.

Salty snacks like chips, pretzels, popcorn, nuts, and crackers are very common snacks that we all reach for from time to time. Sweet snacks, considered by some to be “indulgent snacks”, also have many options including candy, cake, cookies, pastries, and the like.

What’s your favorite snack? Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear from you!

Snacking Stats

Here are some interesting stats from SNAC International’s 2023 State of the Industry Report, brought together by Circana (previously IRI) and Sosland Publishing about snacking:

  • Snacking is on the rise – about 25% of consumers say they snack every afternoon, with another 25% saying they snack every evening.
  • Snack foods account for 27% of all food and beverage sales in the U.S.
  • The salty snack category showed a 15.6% growth in 2022
  • 88% of consumers say flavor is important for making snack choices
  • 1 in 4 Americans prefer salty snacks
  • While consumers showed a preference for familiar flavors, 70% indicated excitement to try new flavors or variations of their favorite snack in 2023 than in previous years.

And, according to a 2022 study by NielsenIQ, “recharging” was the most common reason consumers chose to eat a snack outside of mealtimes.

NCP Panel Member Info

Panel members: Please report all the snack foods that you purchase, even those you buy “on-the-go” at a convenience store or from a vending machine at work. Snack foods that are purchased and consumed before you get home are often forgotten but are so important to include when reporting your shopping trips to NCP.

Whether you prefer sweet or salty snacks (or salty/sweet combos), you can choose healthy snacks options in both categories. Having a snack between meals is not a bad thing if done in moderation. The wide variety of snack foods available today offer something for everyone!

Happy snacking!

Regards,
Taylor
