Pennsylvania is a Middle Atlantic state and is one of the original 13 colonies, becoming a state on Dec. 12, 1787. It is bordered by New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Ohio. The rectangular-shaped state is the 33rd largest in area.

Pennsylvania has two major metropolitan areas: Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, which is the state’s largest city. The state capital is Harrisburg. As of 2024, the state’s population was 13,078,751, making it the 5th most populated state.

Fun Facts about Pennsylvania

The first daily newspaper was published in Philadelphia on Sept. 21, 1784.

Hershey is considered the Chocolate Capital of the United States.

In Hazleton, there is a law on the books that prohibits a person from sipping a carbonated drink while lecturing students in a school auditorium.

Benjamin Franklin founded the Philadelphia Zoo, the first public zoo in the United States.

Fairmount Park in Philadelphia is the largest city park with over 8,000 acres.

In Philadelphia in 1775 Johann Behrent built the first piano in America calling it “Piano Forte.”

KDKA radio in Pittsburgh produced the first commercial radio broadcast.

Famous people from Pennsylvania include the actors Kevin Bacon and Bradley Cooper, musicians Frankie Avalon and Joan Jett, Benjamin Franklin, and Louisa May Alcott.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in Pennsylvania

Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.

Here’s what our panel members in Pennsylvania had to say about their shopping habits:

– 63% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 35% shopping in-store only.
– 62% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 77% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 66% of respondents shop alone, while another 23% shop with a spouse or partner.

When it comes to choosing where to shop, 54% of panel members shop mostly at grocery stores. Another 31% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are rewards and loyalty programs, friendly staff, parking, and quality of products.

Convenience while shopping

While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.

Here’s what Pennsylvania panel members had to say about it:

– 69% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 23% do sometimes.
– 69% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 21% do sometimes.

We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 34% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 35% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.

And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 22% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 40% indicating they frequently choose it. 27% of respondents rarely use it, and 11% never do.

Interests of NCP Panel Members in Pennsylvania

Here are a few other fun facts about Pennsylvania panel members from our survey!

More than half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 82% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include frisbee, hunting, fishing, and farming.

We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 39% said none, while 49% said football. Some of the other sports panelists follow are dog sports, bull riding, bowling, and lacrosse.

We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in Pennsylvania are restaurants/culinary places and local markets. Here are some other answers we got from panel members:
