Up next in our Spotlight on States series: Utah!

Utah, also known as the Beehive State, was admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896, as the 45th state. It is one of the Four Corners states along with Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico; this is the only location in the country where four states meet. Utah also shares a border with Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. It’s the 13th largest state by area.

Utah’s estimated population in 2024 was 3,503,613, making it the 30th most populous state. The state capital is Salt Lake City, which is also the largest metro area.

Fun Facts about Utah

Utah is the only state where every county contains at least part of a national forest.

55% of the people in Utah are Mormons. With more than 2 million members in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Utah has more Mormons than any other state.

Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the largest terminal lakes (lakes with no outflow) in the world.

An average of 500 inches of snow falls every year in the mountains around Salt Lake City.

Frank Zamboni of Utah invented the Zamboni (the machine that drives around and polishes ice rinks).  

The first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant was opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952. The founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, was, of course, from Kentucky.

Famous people from Utah include Butch Cassidy, Roseanne Barr, Jewel, Donny and Marie Osmond, and Chrissy Teigen.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in Utah

Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.

Here’s what our panel members in Utah had to say about their shopping habits:

– 65% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 33% shopping in-store only.
– 66% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 67% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 59% of respondents shop alone, while another 23% shop with a spouse or partner.

When it comes to choosing where to shop, 52% of panel members shop mostly at grocery stores. Another 27% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are loyalty programs, cleanliness of the store, and freshness of produce or meat.

Convenience while shopping

While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.

Here’s what Utah panel members had to say about it:

– 64% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 24% do sometimes.
– 65% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 24% do sometimes.

And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 25% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 55% indicating they frequently choose it. 15% of respondents rarely use it, and 5% never do.

Interests of NCP Panel Members in Utah

Here are a few other fun facts about Utah panel members from our survey!

More than half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 81% of panel members. A few of the other answers panel members wrote in include camping, scuba, trail riding, and fishing.

We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 57% said none, while another 28% said football. Some of the other sports panelists follow are sailing, track and field, and gymnastics.

We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in Utah are natural parks and reserves. Here are some other answers we got from panel members:
