South Dakota was the 40th state to join the union on November 2, 1889. Pierre is the state capital and Sioux Falls is its largest city. South Dakota is bordered by Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of South Dakota is 924,669 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 46th most populous state.

Fun Facts about South Dakota
South Dakota is home of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial which features colossal sculptures of four U.S. Presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln carved into the side of a mountain. Nearly three million people visit Mount Rushmore each year.
Harley-Davidson Motorcycle owners (and others) take over Sturgis, South Dakota every year in August for the largest motorcycle rally in the world.
There are currently seven National Park Service sites throughout the state, as well as 63 state parks and recreation areas that showcase the state’s diverse terrain and landscapes.
There are more than 1,300 free-roaming bison in Custer State Park.
Black Elk Peak (part of the Black Hills National Forest in Custer State Park) is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains.
Started in 1948, the Crazy Horse Memorial is still being carved today in the Black Hills.

Shopping Habits of NCP Panel Members in South Dakota
We asked panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop; along with some other questions about their shopping habits.
Here’s what our panel members in South Dakota had to say about their shopping habits:
When asked how they do most of their shopping, 68% of respondents said they do a combo of online and in-store shopping. 28% said they shop in-store only and 4% said they shop online only.
72% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores vs. 28% who said they shop at a variety of stores.
64% of respondents said they mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
72% of respondents said they shop alone, with another 26% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 58% said they primarily shop at mass merchandise retailers and 28% at grocery stores.
About 81% look for ways to save money while shopping, with digital coupons and joining a store’s loyalty program being the most popular options. They also use paper coupons, use the store sales flyer to plan their list, shop at multiple stores, and subscribe to store emails.
Convenience while shopping
Here’s what South Dakota panel members had to say about different aspects of shopping:
Price, convenience, and location were the top factors that influence where they decide to shop. Most said they shop once a week for groceries and do most of their shopping on Saturdays.
51% never order groceries online to pick up at the store, while 40% sometimes do.
64% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 28% sometimes do.
When asked if weather influenced their choice between online and in-person shopping, 29% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 37% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
When asked about self-checkout, 33% of respondents said they always use self-checkout, 37% indicated they frequently use it, 25% of respondents said they rarely use it, and 5% said they never use it.
Interests of NCP panel members in South Dakota
When asked about the outdoors, 44% said they occasionally participate in outdoor recreational activities. The most popular outdoor activities were hiking/walking (71%), swimming, and canoeing/kayaking/boating. Other activities panel members wrote in were gardening, fishing and hunting.
When asked which sports or events they follow, the top responses were football and baseball.
We also asked what “type” of place or tourist attraction would they recommend to people visiting their state/hometown. The most popular responses were natural parks and reserves, monuments and architectural sites, restaurants/culinary places and local markets, and historical and cultural museums.
