The Province of South Carolina was formed in 1712 and it became a royal colony in 1719. It was one of the original thirteen colonies and became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788. After voting to secede in 1860, South Carolina was readmitted to the Union on July 9, 1868, after the Civil War ended.

South Carolina borders North Carolina, Georgia, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the 40th largest state in area and the 23rd most populous state, with an estimated 2024 population of 5,478,831. The state capital is Columbia, and the largest city is Charleston.

Fun Facts about South Carolina

South Carolina is home to the US’s first commercial tea farm, and is the birthplace of that most delicious of icy, refreshing drinks: sweet tea.

Angel Oak on John’s Island is thought to be the oldest living tree east of the Mississippi River. It’s believed to be more than 1,500 years old.

Frogmore stew is a traditional South Carolinian dish that is not actually a stew, and doesn’t actually use frogs.

The first game of golf played in the U.S. took place in Charleston, SC.

Morgan Island, aka Monkey Island, is an uninhabited island that is home to the only free-ranging colony of rhesus macaque monkeys in the United States. There are around 3,500 monkeys on the island.

Myrtle Beach is the Golf Capital of the world, and South Carolina has more than 300 public and private golf courses in total.

Famous people from South Carolina include James Brown, Chubby Checker, Pat Conroy, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Darius Rucker, and Vanna White.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in South Carolina

Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.

Here’s what our panel members in South Carolina had to say about their shopping habits:

– 63% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 35% shopping in-store only.
– 54% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 71% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 65% of respondents shop alone, while another 24% shop with a spouse or partner.

When it comes to choosing where to shop, 50% of panel members shop mostly at grocery stores. Another 38% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are sales and promotions, ability to buy gas at a reduced price, store pharmacy, and customer service.

Convenience while shopping

While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.

Here’s what South Carolina panel members had to say about it:

– 67% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 26% do sometimes.
– 65% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 24% do sometimes.

We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 37% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 32% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.

And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 20% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 49% indicating they frequently choose it. 22% of respondents rarely use it, and 9% never do.

Interests of NCP Panel Members in South Carolina

Here are a few other fun facts about South Carolina panel members from our survey!

More than half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 81% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include scuba diving, water aerobics, bocce, and boating.

We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 41% said none, while 50% said football. Some of the other sports panelists follow are their kids’ or grandchildren’s sports, skateboarding, and gymnastics.

We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in South Carolina are beaches and coastal areas. Here are some other answers we got from panel members:
