Oregon was the 33rd state to join the union on February 14, 1859. Salem is the state capital and its largest city is Portland. Oregon is the 9th largest state in the U.S. and is bordered by the U.S states of California, Idaho, Nevada, Washington.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of Oregon is 4,272,371 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 27th most populous state.

Fun Facts about Oregon
Oregon’s flag is unique in having a different image on each side. The front shows the state seal, while the back features a beaver, reflecting the state’s history and economy.
Crater Lake, with a depth of 1,949 feet, is the deepest lake in the United States. It was formed approximately 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted, and then collapsed.
Oregon’s Willamette Valley accounts for 99% of the hazelnut production in the U.S. (the remaining 1% is produced in the state of Washington).
Tater Tots were invented in Ontario, Oregon. Brothers Theodore and Nephi Grigg, created the tater tot in 1953 at their Ore-Ida food processing plant.
The Historic Columbia River Highway also known as the “King of Roads” was designated the first scenic highway in the U.S. and is a National Historic Landmark.

Shopping Habits of NCP Panel Members in Oregon
We asked panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their shopping habits. Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live?
Here’s what our panel members in Oregon had to say about their shopping habits:
When asked how they do most of their shopping, 66% of respondents said they do a combo of online and in-store shopping. 30% said they shop in-store only and 4% said they shop online only.
75% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores vs. 25% who said they shop at a variety of stores.
72% of respondents said they mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
70% of respondents said they shop alone, with another 19% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 64% of the Oregon panel members who responded said they primarily shop at grocery stores and 22% at mass-merchandise retailers.
Price, location and convenience were the top factors that influence where they decide to shop. Most of our Oregon panel members said they shop once a week for groceries and do most of their shopping on Fridays.
About 93% of survey respondents look for ways to save money while shopping, with digital coupons and joining a store’s loyalty program being the most popular options. They also use paper coupons, use the store sales flyer to plan their list, shop at multiple stores, and subscribe to store emails.
Convenience while shopping
Here’s what Oregon panel members had to say about different aspects of shopping:
71% never order groceries online to pick up at the store, while 21% sometimes do.

When asked if weather influenced their choice between online and in-person shopping, 38% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 34% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
When asked about self-checkout, 16% of respondents said they always use self-checkout, 37% indicated they frequently use it, 30% of respondents said they rarely use it, and 17% said they never use it.
Interests of NCP panel members in Oregon
When asked about the outdoors, 40% said they occasionally participate in outdoor recreational activities. The most popular outdoor activities were hiking/walking (92%!), swimming, and cycling. Other activities panel members wrote in were gardening, camping and fishing.
When asked which sports or events they follow, the top responses were football, baseball, basketball and motorsports. Panel members also wrote in the Olympics as sports that they follow.
We also asked what “type” of place or tourist attraction would they recommend to people visiting their state/hometown. The most popular responses were beaches and coastal areas, natural parks and reserves, restaurants/culinary places and local markets, and outdoor and recreational activities.
