New York, also known as the Empire State, was one of the original 13 colonies and became a state on July 26, 1788. It is bordered by Lake Erie, Canada, Lake Ontario, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the Atlantic Ocean.

New York’s state capital is Albany, and its biggest city is New York City. As of 2024, the state’s population was 19,867,248. The cities in the state and their suburbs are home to more than four-fifths of the state residents. New York is the country’s fourth-most populous state.

Fun Facts about New York

New York has over 70,000 miles of rivers and streams. The Genesee River is one of the few rivers in the world that flows south to north.

The first American chess tournament was held in New York in 1843.

The “New York Post” established in 1803 by Alexander Hamilton is the oldest running newspaper in the United States.

The first presentation of 3D films before a paying audience took place at Manhattan’s Astor Theater on June 10, 1915.

New York was the first state to require license plates on cars.

The first public brewery in America was established by Peter Minuit at the Market (Marckvelt) field in lower Manhattan.

The oldest cattle ranch in the US was started in 1747 at Montauk on Long Island.

In 1845, a group of men in New York City formed the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club and created the first set of rules for baseball.

Famous people from New York include Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Billy Joel, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Barbra Streisand, and Walt Whitman.

Shopping habits of NCP Panel Members in New York

Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live? We’re curious about this, so we asked our panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their habits.

Here’s what our panel members in New York had to say about their shopping habits:

– 63% of respondents shop both online and in-store, with 33% shopping in-store only.
– 61% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores.
– 71% of respondents mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
– 68% of respondents shop alone, with another 21% shopping with a spouse or partner.

When it comes to choosing where to shop, 60% of panel members shop mostly at grocery stores. Another 24% primarily shop at mass-merchandise retailers. Price, location, and convenience are the top factors that influence where people decide to shop. Other things that influence where panel members shop are the cleanliness of the store, friendly service, parking, and loyalty rewards.

Convenience while shopping

While ordering groceries and other items online has long been an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made delivery and pick-up a lot more common for people.

Here’s what New York panel members had to say about it:

– 70% never order groceries online and pick up at the store, while 23% do sometimes.
– 63% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 27% do sometimes.

We also wondered if the weather influenced a person’s choice between online and in-person shopping. 33% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 33% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.

And finally: self-checkout. Some people love it, others hate it. According to our survey, 19% of respondents always choose self-checkout, with another 39% indicating they frequently choose it. 30% of respondents rarely use it, and 12% never do.

Interests of NCP panel members in New York

Here are a few other fun facts about New York panel members from our survey!

More than half of respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities regularly or occasionally. The most popular outdoor activities are hiking and walking – it was a favorite for 80% of panel members. A few of the unique answers panel members wrote in include bird watching, boating, bowling, and rock hunting.

We asked panelists which sports they follow, and 39% said football, while 40% said none. Some of the other sports panelists follow are lacrosse, cricket, rugby, and ultimate frisbee.

We also wanted to know: what place would you recommend to visitors in your hometown or state? The most popular types of attractions panel members recommend in New York are restaurants and culinary places. Here are some of the answers we got from panel members:
