New Mexico was the 47th state to join the union on January 6, 1912. Santa Fe is the state capital and Albuquerque is its largest city.
New Mexico is the 5th largest state in the U.S. and is bordered by the U.S states of Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of New Mexico is 1,409,032 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 36th most populous state.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the world’s largest hot air balloon festival. It’s a nine-day event that takes place annually in early October.
Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the United States because of its location in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It’s also the oldest capital city in the country.
There are over 119 known caves in Carlsbad Caverns National Park and hundreds of thousands of bats in these caves.
The atomic bomb was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory during the Manhattan Project in the 1940s. The first successful detonation test, known as the Trinity Test, took place near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
White Sands National Park is home to the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

Shopping Habits of NCP Panel Members in New Mexico
We asked panel members questions about how, when, and where they shop, along with some other questions about their shopping habits. Do you think peoples’ shopping habits differ based on where they live?
Here’s what our panel members in New Mexico had to say about their shopping habits:
When asked how they do most of their shopping, 67% of respondents said they do a combo of online and in-store shopping. 30% said they shop in-store only and 3% said they shop online only.
60% of respondents tend to shop at the same stores vs. 40% who said they shop at a variety of stores.
75% of respondents said they mostly stick to their list when shopping, but sometimes make impulse purchases.
65% of respondents said they shop alone, with another 30% shopping with a spouse or partner.
When it comes to choosing where to shop, 57% of the New Mexico panel members who responded said they primarily shop at mas-merchandise retailers and 30% at grocery stores.
Price, location and convenience were the top factors that influence where they decide to shop. Most of our New Mexico panel members said they shop 2-3 times a week for groceries and do most of their shopping Wednesdays.
About 86% of survey respondents look for ways to save money while shopping, with digital coupons and joining a store’s loyalty program being the most popular options. They also use paper coupons, use the store sales flyer to plan their list, shop at multiple stores, and subscribe to store emails.
Convenience while shopping
Here’s what New Mexico panel members had to say about different aspects of shopping:
58% never order groceries online to pick up at the store, while 32% sometimes do.
59% never order groceries online to be delivered, while 32% sometimes do.
When asked if weather influenced their choice between online and in-person shopping, 40% of respondents said weather doesn’t impact their decision, with 37% saying they prefer in-person shopping regardless of the weather.
When asked about self-checkout, 19% of respondents said they always use self-checkout, 45% indicated they frequently use it. 26% of respondents said they rarely use it, and 10% said they never use it.
Interests of NCP panel members in New Mexico
When asked about the outdoors, 35% said they occasionally participate in outdoor recreational activities. The most popular outdoor activities were hiking/walking (88%), swimming, cycling, golf, and canoeing/kayaking/boating. Other activities panel members wrote in were horseback riding and gardening.
When asked which sports or events they follow, the top responses were football, baseball and basketball. Panel members also wrote in figure skating and gymnastics as sports that they follow.
We also asked what “type” of place or tourist attraction would they recommend to people visiting their state/hometown. The most popular responses were restaurants/culinary places and local markets, natural parks and reserves, historical and cultural museums, and cultural events and local festivals.
